Homework 3:2 21/10/09

*Read Blanchard, T (2004) 'Vivienne Westwood in fashion and graphics':

I'm just going to pop a couple of things down that were of interest to me from this piece of writting.
-Her logo now-a-days is almost her biggest selling point, her designs are both traditional and futuristic (using lots of symbols in her designs)
-She started out in the 'pre-punk' years
-Her logo (which is practically her signature) is coloured in light pink and gold. I think, easy on the eye but elegant at the same time
-"graphics feed off the fashion" in all of westwoods designs
-By gradually building up her "vocabulary of symbols", it is vital now to her customers of a long time to recognise the logo. It's like having her own stamp. A follower of her work will always understand and respect this label
-Design is vital in Viviennes work.

Homework 3:3 21/10/09

* Read Traub, C (2006) 'The artist in the marketplace in the education of a photographer':

I'm just going to pop a couple of things down that were of interest to me from this piece of writting.
-I agree when she speaks about photography in the galleries, how it is open to the publics views' and criticisms' and therefore that we as the public audience can decide in our own minds about the works' relevance and importance.
-I enjoyed her definitions of independent, commisioned and contemporary work, this helped be to understand alot more.
-I liked it when she went on to explain 'networks' and the importance it holds when finding locations to exhibit ones' work. The understanding that networks of people relating to, and valuing your work as you do is extremely helpful.
-It is a strong view of hers that fashion is culturally degrading and undervalued as a form of photography, an insult to contemporary artists'.

Homework 2:2 14/10/09

Consider the other sub-definitions of creative practices that you interact with on a daily basis, during the next 24 hours keep a record of all of these that you encounter.

*FASHION:

- Putting my clothes on in the morning, deciding what to wear.
- Going shopping in the town for a jumper...hundreds and thousands to chose from!
- Reading my magazine on the way home from uni, there's several pages designated for "the top 10 hottest winter looks".
- Celebrities in magazines and television supporting the new looks.

*PHOTOGRAPHY:

- Used on magazine covers everywhere.
- On posters and billboards all over town.
- On the front of my new cd cover.
- Using my mobile phone this afternoon to take photos of my friends

*FINE ART:

- Walking past the Bristol museum and art gallery on my way to uni everyday
- Buildings incorporating sculpture (in stone)
- Going into a cafe at lunch and there are paintings on the walls, framed for decoration
- Drawings (grafiti) of people on the wall at the train station between stops on m way home. The painting is easily 20metres in length.

*GRAPHIX:

- Used for the display of bus timetables.
- Advertisements (on posters and billboards)
- Also incorporated with the photography on my cd case
- Used on internet site (e.g. search engines).

Homework 2:1 14/10/09

How do you define your chosen specialism?
"Looking at & working with traditional values of fine art and developing what i learn to build my own technique and style. Fine art used to be very difinable, however today the concept has changed as to what can be considered art."
As a group, we came up with the following descriptive definitions of fine art:
Obsessive, a form of expression, politics, ideological, a form of communication, whatever an artist says is fine art, non-media specific, psychology, indefinable, debatable, novelty or uniqueness in style.

(Having great difficulty uploading the video itself, need some practice)

Homework 1:3 07/10/09

"A link to another site (article, page, blog of notes, etc)"
Banksy is wicked! check it out!

Homework 1:1 07/10/09

"An image- that you consider represents you in some way"

Homework 1:4 07/10/09

* What was the last image, object or artefact that excited you? How, why & where did you encounter this?...
The last object i seen in which excited me was a stone sculpture of 2 miners in a part of the forest close to my home town. Two struggling miners, fighting to get air. Me and my boyfriend were walking his dogs when we stumbled across it. It was a beautiful sculpture that made me feel proud of my local history and environment.
*What excites you about your chosen area of creative practices?
I love to learn about the history of fine art, materials used and how i can relate to it in modern times.
*Why have you chosen to study it further?
Fine art is a strong passion inside me that seems to not want to stop growing. The whole concept of right to self expression is fantastic in itself but to be able to do so in whatever media, emotions and no specific time or place is incredible!
*What do you hope to achieve at the end of the two years? What would you like to be doing?
It goes without saying that i'd like to acheive a degree. However i'd like to have built on that; wisdom, intelligence, friends and development of my passion from strength to strength to support me into employment.
*What sorts of things have you made work or written about or researched specifically before? e.g. are you interested in a particular genre, issue, subculture, etc?
I love abstract art, but appriciate and enjoy all! I would say that the majority of my work in the past has hidden meanings and depth.
*What excites you now?
Photographic artists and particular sculpturists excite me at present, but number 1 at the moment is banksy.
*What sorts of arts, design, preformance, media, events, etc do you go and see, or take part in?
I managed to visit alot of galleries and artistic events last year in London, the tate was incredible! But as of late finances are a considerable issue...
